Texas Child Visitation and Parenting Time

Contrary to popular assumptions that many parents have about parenting time, a joint managing conservatorship does not mean that both parents will have equal parenting time. The title simply denotes that the parents are expected to work together to co-parent and arrive at joint-decisions regarding the child's best interests.

Full Custody Is Not Realistic

While many parents feel that they should be granted full or sole custody of a child, this almost never happens, even in the worst of circumstances. Even if visitation rights are restricted or limited, almost all parents will be able to spend time with their children and have some input in parenting decisions.

While circumstances vary, the typical parenting time and visitation arrangement will consist of one parent who has primary custody while another parent has visitation rights along with a responsibility to pay child support.

What If You Are Not a Biological Parent?

In cases involving same-sex couples or non-biological parents, parenting time and visitation arrangements can vary greatly. For more information, see Rights of Non-Parents and Grandparents to a Child or Same-Sex Divorce, Domestic Partnerships and Custody.
